2016 Project: Beaded Bead #8

This weeks beaded bead is an Icosahedron. I learned how to make this bead years ago from the Elizabethan Necklace project by Lori Stroner in the Dec 2008/Jan 2009 Beadwork Magazine.

Recently I did some craft room organization and found these beads. I made them years ago. No beads were actually made in this weeks bead project, I feel a little like I cheated. Don't tell anyone. :)

They are so cute and little they are made with 4mm Czech glass and size 15 seed beads. They do have a 10mm bead on the inside for support.

I did my best to find a free pattern or youtube video for an Icosahedron but didn't find one. I really can't believe there isn't one. I am not going to write one since many seem to sell the pattern.

I will say that it is a Platonic solid, as in Plato, so it has been around the block a few times :) It is made from 20 triangles, 10 around the middle and 5 on each the top and bottom.

This picture is what the net looks like if you were to make it out of paper. The concept is the same with beads. All of the sides with flaps are where you would glue it if it were paper. With beading they are shared beads that connect the structure together. I start with the center triangles each made of three 4mm beads with 15s in between, connect them together, then add the top five triangles and then the bottom five.

The Interweave store has the pattern I learned how to make these beads from if you don't have the magazine. (The pattern is $4.)
The entire digital edition of the magazine is only $5.99)

18 beads to go!

My remaining deadlines are:

Spring dates: (4 left)  5/5, 5/19, 6/2, 6/16

Summer dates: (6 beads) 6/30, 7/14, 7/28, 8/11, 8/25, 9/8

Fall dates: (7 beads) 9/22, 10/6, 10/20, 11/3, 11/17, 12/1, 12/15

The last bead will be "due" on 12/29!

Thanks for reading and Happy Beading! -Beth
