2016 Project: Beaded bead #2

Bead #2 is a Superduo beaded bead, or as I call it a "Dodecaduo"

Below there are a couple of links to videos and my tutorial on how to make this kind of beaded bead:

Potomac Bead company has a video on how to make these beads.

Beadholique on YouTube has a video of how to make this type of bead using two needles.

My "Dodecaduo" tutorial has pictures of how to make these beads with five different colors.

My bead is not exactly like the beads in any of these tutorials because I add seed beads in between the Duos when I start.

Even my own Dodecaduo tutorial is not exactly the same as the way that I make them now. If you would like to make a bead more like mine, start by stringing 10 beads instead of 5, alternating Superduos with size 11's. The construction is the same with the addition of seed beads.

I took a few pictures while I was constructing this bead since pictures are clearer than words most of the time :)

I think about it as a size 11 should touch every edge of the Superduo.

The next pictures are where I deter the most from the tutorials. I tighten up the beads in between the Superduos as I stitch the bead. My tutorial has this step being done after the bead is constructed. I have found this "tighten as you go" approach makes the bead sturdier and makes it so that you don't have to insert a support bead.

I hope my pictures help explain how I construct this bead! Enjoy! Please feel free to send me pictures if you are beading along! I would love to see what others are making!

24 beads to go!

2016 Year long project: Introduction & Bead #1

In 2015 I challenged myself to a year long bead project inspired by the peyote tubes I saw on the cover of a Firemountain Gems catalog.

This year my inspiration is coming from my love of beaded beads. I hoard them, I make them for no reason at all, and I am a beaded bead addict. This year I am going to share that love in my blog. Some of the beads will be small, some will be large, and some are yet to even be imagined :) It should be exciting...

Like last years project, I will post every other Thursday with a new beaded bead. That makes 26 beads for the year.

Bead #1:
This bead is a basic dodecahedron made from coated Chinese 4mm round "crystals". It is very simple and small. It is a good start to 2016 and a new blog project!

Look how cute it is sitting on a dime :)

If you want to follow along and make beads along with me, I am going to try my best (making no promises) to make beads that have a pattern or tutorial!

Here are a couple of patterns for the dodecahedron:

Fusion beads has a picture tutorial of how to construct it.

Cindy Holsclaw of Bead Origami has a free downloadable pdf on how to make a dodecahedron out of crystals.

2015 Year long bead project necklace

It all started last January when I got  "Inspired by the Spice of Life" and started my year long project of making peyote patterns and tubes. It was a success! I think my necklace turned out beautifully and it fits me perfectly! I spaced the beads with 5mm rounds and finished it with a Sterling toggle clasp.

I really enjoyed having a project to work on all year long. I will be announcing this year's project as soon as I figure out all the details :)

As always, thanks for reading and Happy Beading! -Beth
